Applying the ointment was a chore and punch my heart with every yowl and grumpy attitude she dished out, but in just under a week the redness was gone and the infection treated. Poor Misfit was miserable and walked with her tail low to hide her bare baboon butt, that the other cats were fascinated with. The vet shaved around the area and, after confirming infection, gave Misfit an antibiotic injection and EnteDerm ointment prescription. She yowled with pain all night and her red and raw bum now had inflamed genitals and her anal sacs were milky white dots. My grandmother applied Vaseline to protect her bare tail area until her vet appointment the next day, and by morning we knew it was a mistake. By the time I returned from work, she was miserable and her bum was red like an apple and raw from scooting over the carpet for relief. When we were trying to change her litter in 2014, her bum was not happy, and she would plop her butt in the litter and feces.
So when I come home after work my greeting includes giving her bum a wipe with a wet wipe that is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. Misfit is going on 10 yo and is overweight partially due to eating habits, and partial because of a hernia. Petroleum ointments could retain moisture in the area (if kitty is scooting her booty, who knows where the ointment will roll?) and could increase the risk of developing infection.
#WAYS TO REMEDY SORE BUM FROM DIARRHEA SKIN#
Her reason was that, while it is a good skin protectant, the genitals and anus are so close and the anal sacs could be effected. I was told empathetically not to use any petroleum based products on a cat’s raw bum until it can be examined by a vet. If your cat doesn’t, then you have to be sure to towel it off thoroughly and maybe let it rest on a warm heating pad until it’s dry. She enjoys the blow-drying, but I know that not every cat would. Sometimes I blow dry her - not so much during the summer, but definitely during the winter when it’s cold down there at floor level. I put her on a towel on my lap so I don’t get soaked.
I sit on the toilet seat (lid down, of course!) and fill the sink with warm, not hot water, and wipe and rinse out the rag repeatedly until she’s clean. It’s not cheap, but a little goes a long way, and it relieves me of the worry that an ointment might get into her urethra and create an obstruction.ĭimity also detests baths (gets hysterical and tries to bite), and I’ve found that wiping her clean with a wet washcloth does the job with much less stress. It has both an antibiotic and a pain reliever in it. I got a powder called Neo-Predef from my vet, which can be sprinkled onto whatever part of her bottom is sore.

Since my Dimity wears a diaper every day, and sometimes has a bowel movement when I’m not home (or don’t notice - modern baby diapers are SO full of deodorant, whereas in my day, 40 years ago, you could smell the poop!) she sometimes gets sore down there. They may be able to offer other best practices too, that will encourage healing.Īnd of course, you’ll also want to focus on solving the diarrhea issue as soon as possible, as it can lead to dehydration.ĭo you have any other recommendations?
